Marcus began his St. Labre career his freshman year of high school. He comes from Lodge Grass on the Crow Indian Reservation about 80 miles west of the campus. This means he catches the bus to St. Labre on Sunday evening near his home and stays in our student dormitory through Friday afternoon before returning home for the weekend. When asked about this arrangement, he smiles, “I’ve made lots of friends over here.”
“I’m learning lots of things about the world and other tribes that live in various places.”
His favorite class is social studies because, “I’m learning lots of things about the world and other tribes that live in various places.”
With that in mind, you might think he’s setting his sights on traditional college classes; however, this is not his plan. “I want to go to trade school for two years in Wyoming and become a diesel mechanic.”
This is by no means shocking. Many St. Labre students in the past have opted for trades school or apprenticeships in industry, businesses, or construction. St. Labre provides very good educational foundations in both areas because there are excellent jobs that don’t require a college degree.
Marcus enjoys dormitory life. When he and his friends have free time they enjoy playing games and watching movies. Most of all, he says,
“I just like talking to people and getting to know them.”
When asked what he likes most about St. Labre, he’s quick to say, “The teachers. They are good teachers and they help you here and help you get into college or trade school after you leave.”
We wish Marcus the very best in his endeavors to become a diesel mechanic.
