When I interviewed Chontay in January, she mentioned that she was working hard to become the valedictorian of the graduating class of 2025. Her work paid off. She is representing the 2025 graduates as the valedictorian.
Chontay, of Cree/Sioux heritage, is the third oldest in her family of six children. When asked if that led to babysitting jobs, she nodded affirmatively, but also said all the children in the family are very responsible and make good decisions.
She began attending St. Labre her freshman year of high school. “I have found everyone here to be very friendly and helpful,” she says. “That’s one of the best qualities of St. Labre.”
In addition to being the top scholar of her class, she enjoys participating in track and field. She runs the 100 and 200 yard dashes, throws the javelin and goes for the long jump. She was also manager for the girls’ basketball team.
Academically, she enjoys her art classes, which, at this point, seem to be leading her to study architecture at Montana State University in Bozeman. “I would like to design residential buildings around the state,” she comments. “There is a great need for homes all across the state.” Recently, she shadowed an architect in Billings and found the experience very enlightening and helpful in confirming her post-high school plans.
I have found everyone here to be very friendly and helpful. That’s one of the best qualities of St. Labre.
When asked about the spiritual component of St. Labre, she says, “I really respect the spiritual part of the school. Just being here has made me more spiritual. But I also practice my Native spirituality, too, and find that is respected here as well.”
When asked what advice she would give the upcoming high school classes, she says, “Remember, the school is here for you. Do your part to become successful and make your family and friends proud.”
