St. Labre Bead Work Institute

The St. Labre Bead Work Institute was founded five years ago with a mission statement to encourage St. Labre students to renew and reconnect with their own tribal art tradition.

The institute includes four classes, such as:

  1. Native American Art class, which is the study of rawhide work, ledger art drawing, horse quirts and basics of bead working.
  2. Bead Work I class, which is the basic history of bead work and its evolution, basic bead work stitching of the Northern Cheyenne, Crow and Sioux. At this stage the students do only basic bead work projects.
  3. Bead Work II class, which is the understanding of the evolution of Cheyenne, Crow and Sioux material culture with time and with the development of trade goods. Students are capable at this stage to do bigger and more elaborated bead projects.
  4. Museum Study class, which includes the study of cultural preservation and museum preservation. Students get another view of how to respect, take care of, handle and preserve artifacts. Each semester the students are welcomed by the Plains Indian Museum, in Cody, Wyoming and their skilled museum professionals. The ultimate goal of the class is to get students interested in the museum career field.
